Organic inulin (FOS), from Jerusalem artichocke.
Organic inulin (FOS) is good sweetener suitable for diabetics and people who wants to lose weight. Inulin is a type of fibre that supports the digestive system, the blood vessels and improves overall health, as fibers help lower cholesterol levels and reduce diabetes risk.
Inulin has two varieties – long and short chains. The short chain inulin is very sweet and is mainly used as a sweetener. Long-chain inulin is fiber-rich and is useful for digestion. The package has a FOS indication, indicating that the inulin powder also contains a shorter chain (or sweet) inulin. Nonna organic inulin contains 90% long-chain inulin and 10% short-chain inulin (FOS).
Inulin does not break down or absorb in the stomach, but it is moving in the intestine. Intestinal bacteria use it for the growth of bacteria that is associated with intestinal functions. During the studies, the fibers contained in the Jerusalem artichoke have been found to be prebiotic* and therefore useful in human gut microbiota.
Inulin, added to foods, especially dairy products, promotes good bacterial reproduction. Certain Bifidus-type bacteria have shown that they promote inulin/FOS fermentation. For this reason, they are the good bacteria to supplement our intestines.
* Prebiotics are food ingridients that create „good enviroment“ for „good“ bacteria and for „bad“ bacteria they create „unfavorable enviroment“.
Inulin has many useful feature:
- Very high in fibers
- Good for digestion
- Useful for the intestines
- Relives constipation
- Suitable for diabetics
- Low glycemic index (GI)
The GI indicates the effect of carbohydrates on a person’s blood glucose (also called blood sugar) level. Foods with high GI will increase blood sugar level quickly.
Foods with carbohydrates that break down more slowly, releasing glucose more gradually into the bloodstream, tend to have a low GI (e.g topinambur powder). And this is the reason why feeling of fullness lasts longer.
